Mary wore three links of chain,
Every link was Jesus’ name;
Keep your hand on that plow, hold on.
Hold on. Hold on.
Keep your hand on that plow, hold on.
I took a seat next to her and sang along. We had to hold on if we wanted to face the obstacles of this world. We had to hold on to our faith and stand on God’s word.
Twenty minutes later the police, ambulance, and Karen were all at the door. Karen rushed to Mother’s side, and I talked with one of the officers outside. I gave him Melanie’s suicide letter and told the officer everything I knew.
I told Karen to take Mother Banks to our house and I would follow them shortly. I didn’t want Mother Banks to see her grandchild in such a state. I could barely get the scene out of my head. How was I going to tell Mother Banks about the rape? How was I going to tell her she felt unloved and alone? She took her life because she felt like no one accepted or understood her. She felt unloved. To tell Mother Banks why Melanie took her own life was going to devastate her. And honestly, I was dreading the conversation.
Once the officer’s left, I locked up Mother Banks’ home and headed to my house. I had already spoken with Karen. She said she fixed up our guest room and Mother Banks was resting. Before I got out of the car, I called Faith. I left her a voicemail briefly explaining what had happened. I knew her and Melanie had gotten close, and she would have wanted to know.
I hit the end button on my cell phone and slowly walked up the driveway. I really wish Faith would have answered her phone. This was something I wanted to talk to her about. She had already lost Ashley. To lose another friend was going to be hard on her.
Unlocking the front door, I stepped inside the house. I turned to see Karen standing in front of me. She wrapped her arms around me, kissing me on the cheek.
“Baby, are you okay? Do you want me to fix you something to eat?”
“No, I just want to go to bed. How is Mother Banks?” I asked
“The last time I checked, she was reading her bible.”
“Okay, can you start the shower for me? I’m going to check on her one last time.” I knocked on the door and didn’t get a response. I cracked the door and saw Mother sound asleep holding her bible close to her heart. She looked at peace. But I knew once she woke up, she’d have to deal with the fact that her only grandchild took her life.
After my shower, I said my prayers and settled into bed next to Karen. It had been a long day and I was drained.
“How was your shower?” she asked, snuggling up close to me.
“It was fine.”
“Do you want to talk about what happened?” I really didn’t, but I remembered what was said in one of our therapy sessions it was suggested that I open up more.
